What are automation connectors?
Automation connectors are specialized components designed to facilitate the transmission of power, data, and signals between different parts of an automation system. They provide a secure and reliable interface between sensors, actuators, controllers, and other devices in industrial environments.
These automatic connectors come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each tailored to meet specific performance requirements. In automation systems, connectors are used to ensure the exchange of information and power delivery, enabling real-time control and monitoring of industrial processes.
What are the different types of automation connectors?
As part of the RS range of automation connectors, there are two main types that we can supply: M series connectors or DIN valve connectors.
M Series Connectors
Widely used in sensor and automation systems. Thanks to their circular design, these multi-pin connectors create extremely resilient and reliable seals when mated. Available as M5, M8, M12, and M23 options, the M series automation connectors come with an IP67 dust and waterproof rating to endure the toughest conditions.
DIN Valve Connectors
DIN valve 43650 connectors can be seen in numerous industrial and commercial applications, including manufacturing, temperature sensors, or the transmission of signals inside magnetic valves. These connectors – also known as MPM or sugar cube connectors – can be supplied in three different versions: Form A, B and C, which differ in size, power rating, and pin spacing.
Like the M series, DIN valve connectors benefit from supreme sealing capabilities due to IP65 and/or IP67 environmental protection. At RS, we supply male or female connectors based on your intended application, which can be installed with minimum effort
What to consider when choosing automatic connectors
When choosing cable connectors for your automation system, there are several factors to consider to ensure optimal performance and longevity:
- Durability and environmental resistance: Automation systems are often exposed to harsh environments, including extreme temperatures, moisture, dust, and chemicals. Look for IP-rated connectors to ensure they can withstand environmental challenges.
Signal integrity: Select connectors that minimize interference and ensure strong, stable signals even in noisy industrial environments. Shielded connectors are often ideal in high-interference settings.
Current and voltage ratings: Ensure the connector you choose can handle the required current and voltage levels for your specific application. Mismatched connectors can cause resistance, leading to overheating or signal loss, which can cause system failure.
Ease of installation and maintenance: Look for connectors that are compatible with the other components in your automation system. Ensure the connectors fit properly and offer the right number of pins and types of interfaces for the devices you're connecting. By considering all these critical elements, you can ensure that your chosen solution contributes to a productive, safe, and high-performance system.
What are automation connectors used for?
Automation connectors are the backbone of industrial automation systems, enabling efficient, reliable communication and power delivery across various components. This includes robotics, valves, and pressure switches. It also makes them well-suited to sectors including food and drink processing, automotive production, manufacturing, and commercial measurements.
In addition to industrial settings, automatic connectors are also used in commercial vehicles. This includes construction plant, farm machines, garbage disposal trucks, and lifting equipment, as well as military equipment.
